top 10 spring/summer fashion must haves for kids

By Brandy from Baby Blackbird

Spring is in full swing (for most of us), and summer is creeping up. I wanted to share with you ten must-have fashion items for your little ones this Spring/Summer.

The Summer Shoe

1. Native Shoes : These are not quite a sneaker and not quite a Croc. They are perfect for summer days when they need a little more then sandals but it's just too hot for socks.
2. Toms : You just can't go wrong with a pair of Toms. Not only are they uber comfy, versatile and cute, but with every pair you buy, a pair is given to a child in need.

Colored Bottoms

Color is HUGE this Spring/Summer, for us the colored bottom trend is back (but better then ever). For our kids it's hot fresh and new. Either way it’s super fun!

Straw Hats

A summer hat is a necessity to shade those cute faces from the sun. Straw hats are the hot thing for both boys and girls.

Rompers

BABY BLACKBIRD, roompers, spring must haves

The easiest all in one outfit. Your little girl can romp around in style this spring and summer.

Denim Shirt or Shirtdress

This Spring/Summer all you need to do is flip their little outfit, denim on top color on the bottom (the easiest way to wear the denim shirt). Or go all denim, just make sure the pants are a dark denim if the top is light, matching is not really a must have.

Mini Trenches

How cute would your little girl look wearing a shrunken version of your spring must have?

Bloomer Shorts

The hot new short style for girls. Very vintage inspired, very cute.

Overalls and Suspenders

Overalls are always cool with kids, this spring there are so many options, all with a modern twist. Add a pair of suspenders to any pair of shorts or pants for a little geek chic must have.

Cargo Shorts

baby blackbird, cargos, spring must haves

Comfy, cool, and super hip this spring/summer, which is great as I'm sure every little boy has at least one pair of cargo pants or shorts already!

Nautical Everything!

Nautical is everywhere. Jump on the ship and grab your little one something made for sailing.

1.Zara sailor stripe tee 2.Crew Cuts windbreaker 3.Crew Cuts sailor stripe flats 4.Zara sailor stripe dress

Saltwater Sandals

Now get shopping! :) And come by Baby Blackbird sometime, check out some cute kids street style and the hottest kids fashion trends.

Some of the things I'm loving most from this post are the Toms Shoes, the straw hats, the jumpers, and the overalls (especially that dressall!). Oh, and how can I forget the saltwater sandals that I wore as a kid?! What are your favorites?

eyeing those mini-toms,

baby supermodel featured on postcards from...

I was reading Postcards From... today, and realized that--in the chaos of getting ready to leave for our trip to America--I forgot to point you to a very special feature. You see, back in November Levi was featured on the fashion blog of Kate Maggie.

Kate is a dear friend of ours... and since she has recently moved to Canada, we're missing her a lot these days.

So as I pine away missing all five feet of her fabulousness, I thought to myself "Why not point you all there now?"

Now, without further adieu, please check out "Little Levi" - Levi's very first appearance on a fashion blog. Here's a sneak peak:

Just looking at these makes me a little sad... Levi's changed so much in the last two months, and Kate now lives way too far away from us!

But life marches forward, doesn't it?

While you're visiting the Little Levi post, check out the rest of Postcards From... Not only is Katie more than lovely, so is her blog. And--shhhh--just between you and I, she's also in the midst of starting up Postcards From Vintage - an online shop filled with fabulous re-worked vintage creations. (Love!)

Dear friends, do you read fashion blogs? I don't read many, but this is one that I don't miss... for more reasons than one.

proud of my little supermodel dude,

p.s. Thank you so much for your feedback about the best 1st birthday gifts yesterday! It's great to hear from some other parents of toddlers about what your kids liked best, and what's stood the test of time. xx

i heart... Nike Baby {baby fashion}

It's been many moons since I've done an i heart {baby fashion} post.

But I found this photo in the archives and couldn't resist.

Look at my little dude in his Nike basketball hightops:

Seriously?

That kid is legit. And he's definitely half American. {swish}

It's so strange to think that some day soon he'll be towering above his mama and wearing shoes that are the size of small dogsleds. And possibly even playing basketball himself.

For now, I'll just enjoy his shoes still fitting in the palm of my hand.

Dear friends, Levi rarely gets to wear shoes... only for special outings and silly photo shoots. I suppose that could have something to do with the climate here. Heck, he rarely even wears clothes this time of year. How about you? Do you dress your babies in shoes?

just do it,

the wanna-be halloween post

Because Australians don't really celebrate Halloween... And because it's in the 80's here... And because babies are just so cute in little hats...

I decided to share some of my favorite baby beanie finds on Etsy that would be the perfect centerpiece for a chilly night out trick-or-treating with the big kids... if Aussies did Halloween... and if it was about 40 degrees cooler.

i heart... SEED {baby fashion}

What is it about little boys and puppy dogs?

It's a partnership that's just meant to be.

Combine that with stripes, and... it doesn't get much better.

I'm loving this little puppy print shirt and stripy pants from SEED... another fine Australian fashion icon. Who wouldn't love a company with the tagline: The future belongs to the things that grow. Love!

i heart... Cotton On Kids {baby fashion}

Every little boy needs to have a cowboy shirt right? That's what I said when I saw this one at Cotton On Baby. I'm only sad that Levi doesn't yet fit into the vintage alligator skin cowboy boots that Gigi found him. {"Gigi" is Grandma Gwen - Levi's grandma, my mom.} We'll have to spread out the cowboy cuteness over a couple of years I guess.

{drool spots sold separately}

Oh, and I should mention that I found this adorable little shirt for $5.00 on Cotton On's clearance rack. If they had had another size up I would have bought a second one so he could wear it that much longer. That's how much I love this little boy tee. So adorable. And the cuffed jeans? Old Navy.

i heart... George {baby fashion}

I'm lovin' these little shorts by George at the moment:

They are so preppy and funny to me, but I really love them on him. We have a navy blue polo shirt that goes really well with the shorts... but both together in one outfit is just a tad bit *too* preppy for me (and makes me think I'd also need to tie a sweater around his shoulders). I prefer to pair them with a plain white onsie tee instead. (My favorite are the onsie tees from Just One Year by Carters.)

In other news, big boy five-month-old thinks he can stand up all by himself... momma was entertained and nervous to let him. I had one hand snapping photos and the other ready to catch him just outside of the frame.

He sure was amused... and it made for a very impressive little baby fashion photo shoot, don't you think?

i heart... SOOKIbaby {baby fashion}

Getting a 5 month old to model baby clothes is... impossible. But I just wanted to share one of my favorite Australian baby fashion designers with you: SOOKIbaby. Levi has their little owl shirt and it's definitely one of mommy's faves.

Can't say Levi was successful in showing off the front of his shirt very well... but we sure tried.

(And the super cute jeans are from BabyGap.)

Love,  l o v e,  LOVE,  L O V E  the baby fashion from SOOKIbaby. Check it out and support a fab Australian company!

baby faves: just one year onsies

I loooooove a baby in a plain white onsie! (Or in a white onsie and teeny little baby jeans!) It’s just my absolute fave. Since we live in the tropics, our son lives in onsies most of the time. We have plain onsies from about four different brands and the best ones I’ve found so far are from Just One Year (a division of Carters). They have nice, soft material and hold their shape well through lots of washes.
