In my house, this little blue wonder is called the "bimbo". After five months of trying to teach my husband to say "bumbo" I finally gave up. He just can't get it. So... bimbo it is.
We started putting Levi in his bimbo at three months old. It was love-at-first-sit! This was weeks before he could sit up on his own, but he loved being able to sit up and check things out around him from a different vantage point other than laying on the floor on his back or tummy. (Or being on mommy or daddy's lap.)
He's now almost six months old and has been sitting up independently since four-and-a-half months old (not sure if the bimbo helped him to be an early sitter?). But even though he can sit up by himself, we still use the bimbo all the time, especially if we want to keep our little scooter contained in one place.
He sits in the bimbo on a chair right next to the shower so that I can pick up the toys that he constantly drops and give them back to him... we set it up in front of the computer so he can have skype dates with his grandparents without wriggling off to chase his ball... we use it to feed him his solids since he's still a bit dwarfed in the regular highchair... and the list goes on.
Overall this is a great product and has definitely made it on my must-have list of baby faves. Although I got mine from a generous Freecycler, it's well-worth the $35-$50 you would spend on it (or make that $85 if you are in Australia - yikes!). We also have the tray which you can buy separately. I don't put the tray in the "must-have" category, but it's certainly handy to have.
And lastly, I figure you can get a good four months use out of this little wonder, which is a relatively long time in baby life. I think we'll need to retire it around seven months since he's getting a bit rambunctious and will--I suspect--be ready to bust out of it within the month.
By the way, this is not a sponsored review, just a tip from one mommy to another. {grin}
Dear mommy-friends, what's your latest must-have baby fave?
Mine is the Ergo baby carrier. I was using the Moby wrap and loved it, but now that my baby is older it is nice to have something that is super quick to get on and off. We have been using it everywhere.
ReplyDeletelove the bumbo, or should I say the bimbo! wait till he discovers he can escape!! oh, the fun! ;)
ReplyDeleteFunny that you write about this. Ryder is one of those kids for whom the Bumbo / Bimbo didn't work out. He kept folding forward over the front of the seat and never stayed upright. I kept trying and trying and now his thighs are too fat to fit in it (he literally gets stuck), so I moved him into the high chair yesterday. he LOVES sitting at the table with us, so I guess we're done with the Bimbo and I can give it back to my friend from whom I borrowed it.
ReplyDeleteIt's so fascinating to see how different products work great for some and not for others. I guess the Bimbo wasn't made for our family ;-)

Georgia loved her bumbo until her thighs got too fat to fit into it. She was probably 10 months before she stopped using it...
ReplyDeleteMy must-have right now is our ABC puzzle. Simple, I know, but Georgia uses it in a million different ways. She says the letters, signs the letters, does the actual puzzle, even likes to name the colors of the letters. Endless possibilities...
I think my must have right now is the travel swing. I carry it around the house to put little B in so that he is close to us. He even sits on the dinner table during dinner time so he is part of the family.
ReplyDeleteI work in an infant room at a child care center, and we use the Bumbo CONSTANTLY. Most babies love it, though there have been few that hate it. $85 in Australia?! Yikes! is right!
ReplyDeleteMy husband referred to the Bumbo as the Bumble. And no amount of correcting stopped that either. I like "bimbo" better.
ReplyDeleteWe were huge bumbo fans here too! We don't really use it too much now - though still use it as a travel feeding chair (ie: when we are out over the dinner hour at friends' houses). By far one of our best purchases.
ReplyDeleteWe are also Sophie the Giraffe fans here. I was dubious about here for a long time, but saw how other babies loved her. I'm now won over.
Enjoy the rest of the weekend!
Oh my word! Bimbo - that is so funny!!! That is SOOOO something my husband would do. (I mean, he calls our son "bubuljica" - Croatian for "pimple" ....it's a take on "buba" which is the Croatian word for "little bug").
ReplyDeleteOkay - not that I replied so I could give you language lessons....
I so wish I could get a bumbo - they are outrageously expensive here....but the thing we CANNOT do without is our "walk 'n play". I know there is great controversy around it - but there would be even greater controversy in our home (make that mutnity) if we took it away.
Actually - due to the wonders of our walk 'n play I get the house cleaned, laundry done, and dinner made. It's a wonder!!!
Oh I loved mine for my daughter, who was a late sitter. As you said it helped her be able to see more and look around! Unfortunately though for my son, who was even chunkier then my daughter, his little thighs were too big to fit in it very well even from a young age. So if you have a bigger guy (or girl) I would say try using a friends or test it in store first!
ReplyDeleteGreat post Adriel!
My latest is a jumper seat over the door thing. I have some cheap brand that was given to me. I really want the $30 Graco one, but I can't bring myself to buy it. Either way, I love the jumper & so does Isis!
ReplyDeleteWe used the Bumbo for a really short period. By the time she was able to sit in it & hold her head up well, her thighs were already too big for it! She used it for a while, but you could tell she was kinda jammed in there. So I loved the Bumbo, but it's definitely not that great for big-thighed babies!! haha but it was great for her to sit in at first when she started eating solids!
Ooooh so cute! Bumbo seat was huge with my son when he was little LOL. Those pictures are just adorable!
ReplyDeleteWe loved our Bumbo, too...until our little one decided that she'd try getting out of it by arching herself completely backwards!
ReplyDeleteHI!
ReplyDeleteYou commented on my site that I linked in with the mommyhood memos but you couldn't find my entry....
eek...
remind me what I entered...I have severe mommy brain.
Thanks!

Super Cute!! You should post those pictures on the Bumbo Facebook page! www.facebook.com/BumboUSA
ReplyDeleteI bought a bumbo with my first son 2 years ago but he never used it so I gave it away, but now I want to get one for my 2nd son, I think he'd use it a lot more than my 1st.
ReplyDeleteI am your newest follower from friday follow!

Wow Adriel, Levi is just getting cuter and cuter.
ReplyDeleteOne of my favorite things (I wish I would have known about sooner) right now is her pocket/waterproof bib. When I first saw these I thought they were a bit over the top but I have come to LOVE them. I love the convenience (especially in hot climates) of wipe and go after meals instead of adding yet another bib to the never ending laundry pile.
Plus, when bub starts feeding himself it is actually really nice to have the little pocket. Mia loves picking things out of there and it catches a lot of her food. I have since thrown out all her old bibs and this is the only one we use, three times a day, it is great.
I have a Tommee Tippee one but I found this similar one on amazon:

Hope this helps! Amanda
I think I was always too concerned that the Bumbo wasn't good for their development at that age.. *shrug* Personally, I loved my carriers and wraps; a pink Vatanai wrap, a Green Tea Girasol and my Angelpack got me through the first year happy as a clam!
